Syzygy is an independent consulting firm founded by Virginia St. John to support nonprofits on the front lines of protecting and providing access to justice for all. Syzygy works with a network of experienced, mission-driven professionals to provide customized service to clients across the country.
Virginia spent nearly 20 years leading nonprofits because of their promise of positive impact on individual people and our global community. She was chief operating officer of Tahirih Justice Center, a nonprofit supporting asylum seekers, where she led the organization’s national expansion through a five-year and $10M capital campaign. Prior to that she was chief financial officer of Legal Aid Justice Center, a statewide legal services, impact litigation and advocacy organization in Virginia focused on addressing systemic issues that contribute to poverty and inequality. For several years she was chief of staff in the global Governance, Risk and Management Practice of Deloitte LLP. She started her career in journalism and investor relations before seeing the light in her work with nonprofits.
Virginia holds a BA in English from the University of Virginia and an MS in Accounting and Financial Management from the University of Maryland. She earned the designation as a Certified Government Financial Manager (inactive). She has taught nonprofit management, leadership and business communications as an adjunct instructor with Colorado Mountain College and volunteers as a nonprofit leadership mentor in her local community. She and her husband Alex have four grown children, two goofy dogs, and world's sweetest cat.
